Chair Yoga – Poses to do in the Office


Sitting in an office chair all day can cause all sorts of problems such as back pain, poor circulation and strain on the arms and shoulders. Unfortunately most of us now work in front of computers which means we have to spend a lot of time sitting down.

However, it is possible to do some exercise whilst sitting in your chair that will help alleviate aches and pains and keep your body trim and tones. Check out these great chair yoga poses that you can do at work.

Lotus Preparation

Before you start, sit for a few moments in the lotus position to help calm your mind and prepare for exercising. To get into the lotus position get yourself comfortable then place your hands palms up with your forefinger and thumb touching. If possible you can also cross your legs which helps relieve pressure from your spine.

Eagle Arms

This pose is great for your shoulders and arms and can help prevent repetitive strain injuries caused by typing. Sit comfortably in your seat and place your arms out in front of you. Bend your elbows and interlock your arms, then place your palms together and stretch. Repeat this with both arms for the best effect.

The Lunge

Stand up and place your hands on the back of your chair with your feet together. Then draw back your foot and sink down into a lunge position. Repeat with the other leg. Make sure you do this exercise slowly and methodically to get the best effect.

The Twist

For this exercise sit in your chair with your back straight, the place your hands on the arms of your chair and turn your body to the right, twisting from the hips. Repeat this motion to the left.

The Mountain Pose

For this exercise get yourself comfortable in your chair, ensuring that your back is straight. Next place your arms in front of you and slowly raise them up until your palms are pointing at the ceiling. Imagine yourself stretching up to the sky as you perform the pose. This position is great for relieving stress form the arms, neck and shoulders.

Restorative Pose

When you’ve finished exercising it’s important to perform a restorative pose to ready yourself for getting back to work. This pose can be performed in operator chairs or any other type of office chair. Sit comfortably with your legs together and feet flat on the floor. Place your arms on your desk and cross them, then simply rest your head on your arms for a few moments.
